Peter Doherty on scientists in the spotlight

Interesting article from Peter Doherty (who is based in the Microbiology & Immunology department at the University of Melbourne where I work) about what it was like to be thrown into the spotlight by winning the Nobel prize.

I particularly like his line at the end:

“Real status in science is based on current performance, not on past achievement.”

This seems to me to be the attitude of the true scientist – whatever amazing things you’ve already done, developed or discovered, there is still a whole world of the unknown to explore.
